They are the Parents I Wish I Had

I was first introduced to adoption when I was sixteen years old and pregnant . My childhood had been very tough…..At the time I realized I was pregnant I was five months along. When I told my mother she took me to several abortion clinics. It was explained that I was too far along for the procedure. I knew at the time I was incapable of taking care of a child. I couldn't even take of myself! By mystery and luck, I was introduced to an adoption agency who lead me to Ellen Roseman.

At the beginning of adoption planning, I wanted it to be a closed adoption . It seemed as if it would be too difficult for me to face the facts of my past by always being reminded of it when in contact with the adopted parents. The adoption was semi-open for about two years. Ellen and the adoptive parents were always sending photos, letters, and just checking in. I now regret I wasn’t more open, even though I believed it helped me in a way.

The adoption has been fully open now for more than six years ½ and I couldn't be happier about that.

With the help of Ellen, I found the best parents possible for the child I know I wasn't able to give the proper care and attention to at that time of my life. I wanted a couple who were committed to each other.

At the time I dreamed of being a pilot, so I looked for someone who had flight experience.  Next, I wanted a couple who would take care of my child’s needs and be able to cherish the moments with my child who I wanted to have more than I could give.

Ken and Nancy have showed more love and gratitude for Olivia then I could ever ask for, as well taking on the challenge of adopting two beautiful boys with Ellen’s help. I'm glad Olivia has siblings. It wasn’t that great for me being an only child. They have come to California to visit many times and brought me to North Carolina to visit them.

We are in contact about once every week and via e- mail as well. I couldn't have asked for a better set of parents for Olivia. They are the parents I wish I had when growing up……

I'm very thankful to Miss Ellen for always trying to find me whether it was at my high school or work -- she never gave up finding me or staying in touch. Never. I'm glad  this has became an open adoption. I highly recommend a very open adoption to anyone considering it. It may seem hard to do at first, but give it time. I’ve never regretted it. Ellen’s services for birth parents are caring and ethical – so much education provided too.
