OPEN ADOPTION

Open adoption is about representing the needs of the child.....not the adults around him or her. It is about lessening the losses felt by every adoptive child.

It means that after exchanging full identities, the adoptive family and birth family commit themselves to lifelong relatedness for the benefit of the child. This is done not only through pictures and letters, but visits and time Spent with birth family. Open / cooperative adoption recognizes that each family has important ongoing contributions to make to the adoptees well being. And, it recognizes that all have significant responsibilities to sustain and nourish this vital relationship.

Open adoption is not by definitioin ?anything you want it to be. ? It requires an uncompromising commitment To children and their needs. Adults involved in open adoptions are asked to set aside their fears and insecurities And to ?parent from the needs of the child and not their own.?

As an adoption service which is child centered, Cooperative Adoption Consulting strictly follows Child Welfare League of America guidelines established in l986 and Updated fully in 2000 recommending ?open adoption as standard practice? based on 50 years of longitudinal studies of adopted children. Closed and semi-open Adoptions are never facilitated based on ethical principles in our commitment to the welfare of each and every Child we serve.
